DigiRail IoT Gateway With WiFi

This economical module solves the problem of data collection in local or remote applications. DigiRail IoT helps assimilate sensors and RS485 devices using existing network infrastructure to provide data acquisition and logging — hardwired remote I/O to MQTT or Modbus, passing data to OEE, DCS, or SCADA, with open MQTT broker compatibility and gateway functions for both Modbus TCP-to-RTU and Modbus RTU-to-MQTT, plus an RS485 Master mode with 8 channels/registers.

Direct connection of sensors and analogue signals is supported. The module contains 6 digital inputs, individually configurable to monitor state (On/Off) or act as counters, plus two analogue inputs and two digital outputs.

Initial configuration in Novus NXperience is an extremely quick process. With a small amount of interface wiring the module can begin gathering data in minutes. This can be passed via MQTT to Cloud services, or sent to PLC/SCADA systems using the Modbus TCP protocol.

Modbus TCP to RTU Pass-Through Gateway

This model can be used as a transparent gateway with no mapping of registers required. It's suitable for reading/writing registers on RTU Slaves wired to the RS485 terminals — simply communicate via Modbus TCP and the module automatically translates commands.

Gateway Mode is a simple method allowing IT equipment or PLCs with Ethernet ports to communicate with devices such as temperature controllers, instruments, and meters — removing the physical mismatch between Ethernet/LAN cabling and RS485, and compensating for differences in protocol message structure.

Modbus RS485 Master Mode

When configured as an RS485 Master, the IoT Gateway can receive up to 8 registers via the built-in RS485 terminals — useful for collecting data from field devices such as metering equipment equipped with RS485 terminals. The 8 registers can be received from a single device or multiple devices with different addresses. Unlike basic gateway mode, register values are held in the device's internal memory.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between this and the Ethernet model?
Only the network connection — this WiFi version avoids running a new Ethernet cable, useful where the module needs to be sited away from existing network points. Consumption is slightly higher on WiFi.

Can it collect data without a full Modbus network?
Yes — in RS485 Master mode it reads up to 8 registers directly from one or more field devices, holding the values in its own internal memory.

Can this connect existing RS485 devices to a WiFi network?
Yes — as a transparent Modbus TCP to RTU gateway, it lets WiFi-equipped PLCs/SCADA systems communicate with RS485-only field devices with no register mapping required.

Industry Applications

  • Retrofit Installations — WiFi connectivity avoids new cable runs to hard-to-reach machinery.
  • OEE & Machine Monitoring — passes hardwired I/O data to OEE, DCS, or SCADA systems.
  • Legacy Device Integration — bridges RS485-only field devices onto a wireless Modbus TCP network.
